Garcia made a big difference in my life

Saturday’s blog featured a release about100 years of Abu Garcia. Obviously, I wasn’t there there all that time — but my relatively early involvement was a significant part of my life.

As a youngster crazy about fishing, I thought it would be great to work in the fishing tackle business or to earn a living writing about the sport in magazines or a newspaper. There was no apparent path to do so, but as it turned out that’s exactly what eventually happened though there were some twists of fate involved.

After graduating from Naval Officers Candidate School at Newport R.I in 1959, I was assigned to a destroyer (John R. Pierce DD -753) and served for a year as First Lt. on that WW II rust bucket before receiving a change in orders to the U.S. Naval Station in Trinidad, West Indies — where I could fish every night from empty piers. I also bought a 20-foot skiff cut from a single tree which was powered by a 12 HP West Bend outboard with which I fished the Caribbean Sea despite having no radio and only a pair of oars in case anything went wrong.

When my tour of duty was up (after an extension in the Berlin Crisis), I returned to N.Y. with a taste for adventure — and no desire to commute to a desk job as my father had done. Therefore, I applied to the C.I.A.

I took the test in Washington and looked for a job to hold me over before finding out if I was accepted. I saw a sales position advertised in the Sunday N.Y. Times for a man with a car who was interested in fishing. That sounded just right, especially when it turned out that the ad was placed by the manufacturers rep for Garcia. That was the only time such an ad had been placed in a newspaper since jobs in the trade usually were passed on to family members or relatives.

Traveling along the coast to visit tackle shops put me in a position to learn much more about fishing, particularly in New England where I became a fishing partner of the great plug innovator, Stan Gibbs and many other top anglers while catching striped bass larger than I’d ever dreamed of.

When the C.I.A. called, I decided to stick with my dream job which actually also paid better. I later found out the delay in acceptance was due to a security check though I already had final top secret clearance from the Navy as the War Plans Officer in Trinidad. If it wasn’t for that delay I would have been a “spook” instead of an outdoor writer!

Tom Lenk was the visionary president of Garcia who turned a small Spanish importing firm into the the giant of the fishing tackle business by introducing mass merchandising techniques into what had been a small store business by introducing Mitchell spinning reels to the public and bringing the price of getting into that relatively new to Americans method of fishing into the range most anglers.

I’ll conclude about those early days of Garcia tomorrow.

The storm warning continues through late tonight with northeast gusts to 55 knots before dropping to north 20-25 with gusts to 30 along with likely snow in the morning.

Boaters should take precautions in gale

Those few rugged boaters that still have vessels in the water should take extra precautions as very strong winds combined with snow and cold are producing the worst conditions of the winter.

A gale warning is up tonight and through Monday with northeast gusts to 40 knots tonight and to 55 on Monday along with rain, sleet and snow.

I’ll have my insight about the early days of Garcia in tomorrow’s blog.

Abu Garcia turns 100

The following press release was of particular interest to me as I started my career at Garcia. More about that tomorrow.

ABU GARCIA TURNS 100
Famed fishing-equipment maker celebrates a century of success in 2021 with a host of activities and promotions spread throughout its anniversary year.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (Jan. 13, 2021) — A lot has changed over the past century, but in the sport of fishing, one brand has remained a mainstay for serious anglers worldwide who require innovative and high-quality rods and reels to pursue the fish they love. In 2021, Abu Garcia® observes an important milestone in the company’s history—its 100th anniversary—by looking to the future while also paying homage to a legacy that spans across continents and marks the foundation for many modern-day angling innovations.

Carl August Borgström founded AB Urfabriken in 1921 near the Mörrum River in Svängsta, Sweden. The onset of World War II in Europe led AB Urfabriken (ABU) to redirect its skills to the development of precision fishing reels used by anglers around the world. In 1984, the company changed its name from ABU to Abu Garcia when it merged with its U.S.-based distributor, Garcia. Along the way, the company built a reputation for excellence with products like Ambassadeur®, Record and Revo®.

“The history of Abu Garcia is unique, but it all started with an unwavering commitment to building the best fishing equipment possible,” said Abu Garcia Senior Vice President of Marketing Jon Schlosser. “We are proud to be at the forefront of innovation, design and performance in the fishing world. Our rods are lighter and stronger; our reels are faster. Our commitment with every piece of equipment we produce is to make sure our gear continues to help anglers succeed for the next 100 years.”

Even while celebrating a century of success, Abu Garcia keeps its eyes fixed firmly on the future, looking for ways to marry strength and performance throughout its products by envisioning what fishing will look like—and where it will take place—decades from now. Anticipating angler needs and harnessing the power of advanced materials and engineering practices, Abu Garcia continues to make rods stronger without sacrificing sensitivity with lines like the Veritas® PLX. Abu Garcia reels recover line faster, cast farther and have smoother drags, as evidenced by the Rocket line, while the pursuit of gear that’s lighter and more durable never stops. It’s how Abu Garcia gives anglers what they need to fish to win, no matter whether they’re fishing for fun or for a living.

To mark its 100th anniversary year, Abu Garcia will bring special promotions to consumers, launch new and exciting product lines and deliver other anniversary-related activations that celebrate the sport of fishing, the company’s storied place in it and its vision for the future. For more information about Abu Garcia’s 100th anniversary and to see its lineup of industry-leading fishing equipment, go to www.abugarcia.com.

A small craft warning is up until 6 p.m. for northwest winds up to 25 knots before dropping to northeast at just 5-10 by morning. That changes rapidly after midnight tomorrow with east gusts to 40 knots plus snow — and then a storm warning for Monday.

Seals taking over in NJ

Climate change theory indicates that in response to warming marine species will move north for cooler waters. However, it appears that Al Gore hasn’t gotten that message out to seals which are doing the opposite. Dave Lilly of Hazlet reports there are great numbers of seals sunning themselves in the Sandy Hook-Shrewsbury River area. That continues a trend going on for years, though they were a rarity when I moved to N.J. just a few decades ago.

Seals may look cute. but they are vicious predators and eat all sorts of fish — including school stripers. Worst of all, they will surely prevent any possibility of a winter flounder revival. The latter spawn during the winter in our bays and rivers, but while anglers can only keep two flounder of at least 12 inches, seals have no limit on what may be their favorite food.

The weather is suitable only for seals. A gale watch continues into Saturday morning which starts with northwest winds of 15-20 knots with gusts to 25, Yet, the Jamaica’s Sunday offshore wreck trip may work out as the wind drops out Saturday night and the Sunday forecast is for north at just 5-10 knots before a northeast blow on Monday. Call 732 528-5914 for reservations.

Ocean Explorer got into trophy tog

Winter blackfishing has been generally tough, but the Ocean Explorer from Belmar got a big surprise Wednesday when big tog were chewing despite lumpy seas even with northwest winds. “Mr. P” had the tog catch of a lifetime with six from 10 to 14 pounds. The 14 would have taken out the 10.8-pounder leading the seasonal pool if he had been entered. Many 6-10-pounders were caught by other anglers. High winds have prevented a return, but they have hopes of getting out Saturday. The Big Mohawk from Belmar did poorly Sunday and Monday — and have given up for the winter.

Fin-Essence shedder crab essence has long been sold at the Tackle Box in Hazlet, but is now also available at Bass Pro Shops and Cabelas both online and in the northeast stores. Dipping lures and baits in that smelly stuff can make a big difference at times.

A gale warning is up through Saturday morning. Friday starts with northwest winds at 25-30 knots with gusts to 40 and light freezing spray.

Jamaica to fish offshore on Sunday

There are few opportunities for fishing in the frozen north at this time; but the Jamaica from Brielle will be fishing far offshore wrecks on Sunday, when the weather forecast looks good. With the sea bass season closed, the target will be jumbo porgies plus possible cod, pollock and ling. Sailing time is 11 p.m. Saturday night. Call 732 528-5014 for reservations.

Small craft warnings are up for Thursday, followed by a gale watch for Friday. Winds are north at 15-20 knots in the morning, increasing to northwest 20-25 in the afternoon.

Michael Jordan adds a fishing tournament to his records
