Rough waters — but lots of big stripers

Capt. Ron Santee Jr. fished his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands in the snot today as the great NJ/NY Bight striper bite continued. “Never expected it to get so nasty today, especially after the change of tide…..

Didn’t matter and it actually helped with the bite. Had a very good first drift to start things off with Bigger fish. Bounced around a bunch of life that was working and found a dozen fish to take home.

85 year old Stoney who has seen many a good day in his life landed 3 beauties, lost 3 and ended up with a keeper for dinner. How he stayed at the rail I’ll never know but he is one tough S.O.B!! Nice body of fish once again and some local fish starting to show the past couple of days.

The Golden Eagle from Belmar had a similar report of spectacular bird life on surfacing stripers a;long with readings from top to bottom. Run-Off jigs with or without teaser tails did the job.

The weather looks good for tomorrow.

Had to work harder for big stripers today

Capt. Ron Santee Jr. had a bunch of Fishermen regulars aboard this morning when he left Atlantic

Highlands and saw bass working near the beach. Those bass wouldn’t hit, “so we headed for some excellent bird life a couple of miles away.

Found the Big Bass again but today they were very finicky, caught a couple each drift as the day went on and we never had that 6-8 on at a time. Today you had to work it hard to get the reward.

Had fish on top just about every place we went yet, they never seemed to settle up. Weather looks good all week!

Capt. Ron Santee Jr. of the Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands summed up another great day of striper fishing as follows:

Once again it was a gorgeous day on the Striper grounds…

Sailed with a nice gang of customers and they were all looking for a battle! Arrived to the area and had bird life in several directions with fish busting. Got set up and slugged away on Big Beautiful Stripers all day. Ended up with a couple keepers in the mix but most were huge once again.

Weather looks great tomorrow.”

The forecast is for north winds at 5-10 knots plus gusts to 20 before going east in the afternoon.

Even the Saturday crowd didn’t slow the big striper bite

Capt. Ron didn’t need many words to sum up today’s great striper bite on his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands in NY/NJ Bight. “Had the crew from Fletcher Creamer out with us today and the fishing did not disapoint!!

Action from the first drift to an awesome 35 minute drift at the end of the day. Couple more keepers in the mix today. High hooks had 5 to 8 fish all on the Rod Rentals!

Several area’s of fish to work so there was no crowding anywhere. Back at it in the AM.

Sailing everyday 7:00am Sharp. First boat out, First boat on the meat. No Reservations, just get here early. Fare is $90, Rod Rentals $20.

See you in the AM, I will have jigs for sale at the dock.”

A small craft advisory is up until late tonight. The forecast is for north winds at 10-15 knots plus gusts to 20 before going east in the afternoon.

Vinny D’Anton has had surf bass reports from Long Island, but not in the recent rough waters of the North Jersey Shore

Jamaica has room on Tuesday’s tuna trip

The Jamaica from Brielle reports “the 31 hour trip that sailed Tuesday morning was another good one. When we arrived at the Canyon didn’t take long to start picking away at nice size yellowfin tuna with a few longfin mixed in.

The night fishing was slow with only a couple of tuna bites and a swordfish

After the sun was up for an hour the tuna began to feed again.

Several customers had their limit and everyone had a shot at a tuna.

We still have some space available on upcoming trips .

We still have plenty of space available for the 31hr trip sailing 7AM October 29, and the 24 hour trips sailing 8 PM November 3, and November 10

You can see trips with availability our website at www.bigjamaica.com

Offshore Giant Sea Bass

Special offshore Sea Bass trips begin on November 1 and we do have availability on many of our trips,”

There’s a mall craft advisory up until 6 p.m.

The Golden Eagle from Belmar has cancelled tonight’s bluefish trip.

Saturday’s forecast is for northwest winds at 10-15 knots before increasing to 20 in the afternoon.

Update on stripers — even better in the snot!

As noted in my first blog today, I’m doing another as the striper bite was even better in rough conditions.

Capt. Ron Santee Jr. reported as follows from his Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands:

Made our way out with a bunch of excited fishermen today after reading the reports for the past couple of days. We did not disappoint.

As we got close to the area, the birds were working, the change of tide was happening and the wind started to honk, the bite was on!

The harder it blew the nastier it got, the better the bite on fish from 35 to 48 inches!! Couple of drifts we had the whole boat hooked up. “

The Golden Eagle from Belmar reported epic striper action with up to six on at a time after hitting Run-Off 4-ounce jigs with either red or green tails. However, they may cancel tomorrow due to a windy forecast. Check with them before heading down.

Big stripers & tuna too

The following striper report from the Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands came in too late for yesterday’s blog, and confirmed the abundance of big stripers.

Awesome Bass fishing trip from start to finish today.

Several guys with their personal Best on fish up to 52 inches! Several areas of life from deep to shallow water all feeding on huge sand eels. Sore arms, sore backs tonight for Joey & I!!!

All jig fishing, I have the jigs if you need them on board, pick them up from me as soon as you arrive and don’t wait for the bite to turn on as we have been busy. You can purchase 3 for $20 any combo including, 47’s Hammered, Jig with tail or just a plain 47. Single is $8.00.

NOT AVAILABLE Saturday.”

Tuna fishing is also holding up in the canyons, as shown by a catch of yellowfins and albacore by a party led by Hans Kaspersetz and run by Anthony and Shane on Water Proof from Point Pleasant.

A small craft advisory is up through Friday afternoon. Friday starts with north winds at 10-15 knots which drop to 5-10 in the afternoon.

If there are any changes, I’ll add another blog late in the afternoon.

NY/NJ Bight striper blast continues

NYC Capt. John McMurray reports the west end of Long Island’s south shore was full of bunkers

and sand eels this morning with both 30-40-pound stripers and whales feeding on them. The smallest bass he caught among them was 34 inches.

On the other side of NY/NJ Bight, Chris Buchta had a similar report as sand eels were the attraction for all “over” stripers.

Chuck Many said it was big bass from start to finish yesterday for Alex Katyan on his Tyman from Highlands.

A small craft advisory is up through late tonight. The forecast for the morning is for north winds at 15-20 knots plus gusts to 25.

It’s on — the big girls went wild today in NY/NJ Bight

After one bummer striper trip after another, everything changed completely today. Capt. Ron Santee Jr. sailed with just five customers aboard his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands to enjoy a wild day.

I took a long ride and Managed 1 fish in the Am. A good friend of mine gave me a call, asked how far away I was, 14 miles I said, his exact words were “Get here Now”!  We took off and arrived to acres of Big bass in several area’s rolling and busting on top. Had two Giant Tuna come out of the water right in the middle of the bass, very cool thing to witness.

The fishing was awesome, all went home with sore arms and Joe and I with sore backs lifting those beauties in!! I caught my first one of the season, put the rod down after that thought the thing was going to kill me. Back at it in the AM.

NOT AVAILABLE THIS SATURDAY……..other than that we are:

Sailing Everyday 7:00am Sharp. Open Boat, No Reservations just come on down. Fare is $90.”

The Golden Eagle from Belmar added a similar report of big bass releases.

Wednesday’s forecast is for southwest winds at just 10 knots before increasing to 15-20 knots in the afternoon.

Beach Brawl was a success

Nick Honachefsky reports his sixth annual Barrier Island Beach Brawl on Columbus Day weekend was another success.

“Brawl was graced with beautiful sunny skies, 2 to 3 foot seas and a sweet northwest wind and those type of conditions had the bluefish on the bite big time. “What a fantastic time we had!” said Nick Honachefsky tournament director. “Over 400 bluefish were reported caught and though the tourney started out weighing in 2 to 3 pounders, some big choppers up to nearly 9 pounds took the top places as the day unfolded with an incoming tide chew. Striper fishing was an early morning and night time affair as 16 stripers were released during the two-day tourney. Blackfish were thick off both the Barney and Squan inlet rocks, but anglers waded through a load of short fish to bring in 7 tautog to the scales.” There were no wildcard category fished weighed in for the first time as kingfish, triggerfish, bonito and croakers were ghost. It took 4 hours to fillet all the donated 140 bluefish and 7 blackfish translating to 100 pounds of fillets given to feed the homeless and hungry at the St. Gregory’s food pantry and the 50/50 raised $1300 for St. Jude’s Charity. Check @nickhonachefsky on IG for photos.

The final standings were:

Local Classics

1-Ed Fliller – Bluefish 8-pound 15-ounces

2-TIE Cliff Horner/Dave McFadden – Bluefish 8-pound 5-ounces

3 – Steve Ciarlo – Bluefish 8 pounds 2 ounces

Top Tog Rich Petrie – 3 pounds 9 ounces

FacebookBrawl was graced with beautiful sunny skies, 2 to 3 foot seas and a sweet northwest wind and those type of conditions had the bluefish on the bite big time. FacebookBrawl was graced with beautiful sunny skies, 2 to 3 foot seas and a sweet northwest wind and those type of conditions had the bluefish on the bite big time.
