Luciano retains Dream Boat lead

The November edition of the Fisherman magazine is out, and Thomas Luciano remains leadership of that publication’s Dream Boat Fishing Challenge. His 7.98-pound weakfish has led that category from the start, and the additions of the 7th place porgy and the 5th place sea robin totals 20 points for a four-point lead over early leader Rashawn Williams. The winner will receive a fully-equipped Steiger Craft center console.

The 15-pound minimum size for bluefish was finally breached as Amir Aripul now leads that category with a 16.5-pounder. Gregory Brennan took the lead in blackfish with a 7.59-pounder that also positions him in third overall so far.

The northeast winds continue with small craft warnings up and heavy rain also expected to

morrow. Capt. Ron Santee is hoping to be able to sail again for stripers with his Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands on Sunday.

More NE

More of the same continues to cripple fishing in all but well-protected areas as the forecast for NY/NJ Bight continues at 20-25 knots plus gusts to 30. A small craft advisory is up through late Wednesday.

More northeast problems, but some surf stripers showing

As if there hasn’t been enough northeast weather recently, there’s more coming. A small craft advisory is up from Tuesday, with 15-20 knots plus gusts to 30 . The Golden Eagle from Belmar has canceled morning trips through Thursday.

On the other hand, we need northeast winds at this time of year to get the fall migration started. There have been recent signs of that, but the water is still in the 60’s — and pompano were being caught during the Columbus Day weekend Beach Brawl.

There was better news today from Monmouth County beaches as Vinny D’Anton reported several decent school stripers have been caught on the Tsunami Sand Eel. There’s been no sightings of sand eels so far, though Vinny saw a sea gull drop a peanut bunker.

There was better news from Betty & Nick’s in Seaside Park as follows “27-27 UPDATED 8:01 AM Well Kevin Deiter, has been here all of less than 24 hours and there’s a 48 incher on the beach on a Gordon Wright(RIP) metal lfluke Couple more blues and fluke.”

Lots of bait, but dogfish a problem

Capt. Frank Masseria wasn’t pleased with the competition for baits fished yesterday for stripers from his Vitamin Sea out of Port Monmouth Marina as noted: “The jig bite yesterday was pretty much nonexistent so we opted to live line today (thanks Derek and Jared)

The fish we found were all overs and the bite could have actually developed well except for the out of control dogfish. Pretty much couldn’t put a bait in the water without it being attacked.”

Today he had customers who wanted striper fillets rather than big releases. Therefore he stuck to casting shads while seeking small bait where he eventually found the smaller keepers.

The marine forecast for NY/NJ Bight switches back to northeast — though at only 10-15 knots.

Another picky day on stripers

Capt. Ron Santee summed up today on his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands as follows: “Found the life once again, only today they didn’t want to bite!

Hit a whole bunch of area’s trying to find the fish that were hungry, saw a bunch of Albies that were hard to catch also. Finally found some bunker and had a couple shots of fish on the shads and live bait but it was short lived.

Seems all the reports up & down Found the life once again, only today they didn’t want to bite!

Great forecast for Saturday in NY/NJ Bight with northwest winds at 5 to 10 knots

Tough day for stripers

Just when early fall striper fishing looked to be well underway, those fish turned scarce and fussy today.

Capt. Ron Santee ran his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands back to where he left plenty of them yesterday, but the bait had moved and the fleet never got on them. A couple of bass were caught and a couple more lost. Tomorrow is another day!

Chuck Many had big striper releases on Sunday with his Tyman from Highlands.”Sunday was a tough one!! South wind was howling, seas were rolling, but we did manage a few absolute monster Bass. Also had a cool moment when a Bluefin ate an eel on a down rod. Almost spooled us, chased it down to get line back on the reel, but it ultimately broke at the leader. You never know what might happen when you put a bait in the water!”

*******

A great forecast for tomorrow in NY/NJ Bight with west winds at just 10-15 knots.

BLUE RUNNER Oct 18-19

Capt. Mark DeBlasio reported last week from his Blue Runner from Point Pleasant. “Well .. a little birdie told me yesterday that our offshore season is a wrap and I’d have to agree. Chased some warm water to the south. Started off on troll and pretty early on went 1 for 2 on Yellowfin. Continued looking around and released some Bluefins and Skippies. Most of the marks were deep so went on chunk and had more skippies but none of our target species. Overnight saw us release a Sword, Mako and Tiger shark but no Tuna. Missed a few more S…

Great ocean striper run continues

Just received — Capt. Ron Santee reports from his Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands as follows: “Once again, the first boat out and we were on the meat right off the bat!

All big fish today with several guys landing their personal best. Loads of bait in the area along with several  area’s of fish. All Jigs with tails & plain jigs.  Back at it in the AM….Sailing early!

7:00am-2:00/2:30pm. First boat out

It was a different story on the beach. Conditions were good, but Vinny D’Anton and Frank Manzi checked all along the northern Jersey surf plus Sandy Hook Bay with no sign of bass or bait except for the party boat fleet off Monmouth Beach.

Chuck Many had a great Saturday on those big bass. Lost his message in trying to copy it, but the report was of non’stop jigging before switching to live eels for a shot at even bigger bass as the crew ended up releasing almost a hundred up to 48 pounds.

Big striper bite continues

After a day off due to the weather, fishing for stripers continued at a high level. Capt. Ron Santee reported from his Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands as follows:

Once again, the first boat out and we were on the meat right off the bat!

All big fish today with several guys landing their personal best. Loads of bait in the area along with several  area’s of fish. All Jigs with tails & plain jigs.  Back at it in the AM….Sailing early!

7:00am-2:00/2:30pm. First boat out.”

The Capt. Lou Fleet from Freeport reported great blackfishing during Sunday’s N.Y. opener with limits all around the boat.

Vinny D’Anton said the north Jersey surf cleared up this morning, but there was still no casting action or any sign of bait.

The NY/NJ Bight marine weather forecast includes a small craft advisory from 6 p.m. through Wednesday night. However, it may be fishable for bigger boats in southwest winds at 20-25 knots

More wind, but better direction

Anglers in NJ/NY Bight have had to deal with lots of wind for some time, but at least there’s some hope with a change to a calming west direction.

There are still small craft warnings for 20-25 knot west winds plus gusts to 30, but I remember many days when chartering out of Highlands and beating across the bay to get into the lee of Staten Island where hungry stripers were waiting. Capt. Ron Santee is planning on giving it a try tomorrow with his Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands. There were lots of stripers during the last trip though most are too large to keep.
