Though I never heard of any spring run of Atlantic mackerel in NY//NJ Bight. this year, they must have been nearby as tinker mackerel have suddenly appeared.
Betty & Nick’s in Seaside Park: reported those young of the year mackerel are luring stripers closer to shore for anglers frustrated at watching others hit schools of large bunkers outside the bar.
NYC Capt. John McMurray reported the small Atlantic mackerel in his area — and I’m sure he knows the difference between them and chub mackerel.
Striped bass boat fishing held up today. Capt. Ron Santee ran his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands to where he left them yesterday, but the bite didn’t hold up and he made a run that got him into a hot bite as the wind came on and it got nasty. He emphasized that it will be rough again tomorrow — but that’s what turns on the bass — and where he’ll be!
There is a storm warning tonight into the morning when it drops to northwest at 25-30 knots.
