Winds finally dropping in NY/NJ Bight

After what appeared to be an never-ending windy winter, there may be some fishable days coming up in NY/NJ Bight this weekend.

The Friday forecast is for northwest winds at 20-25 knots plus gusts to 30 before winds drop down Saturday,

Blackfish and ling will be the best bets inshore, while those venturing a bit further offshore may be able to catch large cod on mid-range wrecks.

There’s been no word of any mackerel, as has been the case for several years, but those fish have shown up out of nowhere in the past — and hope springs eternal.

You certainly won’t catch a roosterfish this weekend, but that’s a species which should be on every angler’s bucket list. A great fighter that also jumps !

Asbury Park show coming up next month

The historic Asbury Park Fishing Club will run its annual show in March. Johnny Calamari reports the .

the date will be Sunday, March 2 in the Berkely Waterfront Hotel from 9-2. This show is famed for the appearance of all wooden plug makers in the area.

Vinny D’Anton reports from Sarasota that he did very well casting MirrOlures to spotted sea trout during the last cold front — and expects the same thing to happen as another cold front arrives.

A storm warning is up in NY/NJ Bight until 4 p.m. Tuesday starts with west winds at 20-25 knots plus gusts to 30 — and light freezing spray.

Storm warning posted

As if yesterday’s gale warning in NY/NJ Bight wasn’t bad enough, the forecast for Monday is up to a storm warning. South winds at 30-35 knots will gust up to 45 knots, creating waves up to 14 feet.

N.J. Capt. Mark DeBlasio reports from N.C. that a cobia was a surprise catch among the thousands of bluefin tuna which have been providing the best action he’s ever seen there.

Gale warning in NE

A gale warning is up in NY/Nj Bight from Sunday through Monday morning. It starts slowly with south winds at 10-15 knots but gusts to 30 with rain at dawn before increasing to 25-30 plus gusts to 45 in the afternoon.

Anglers have lots to choose from this weekend on shore with Saturday’s Surf Day at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J. plus the Philly Fishing Show at Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, and the Boat Sale &Expo at Edison. Bluefin tuna remain a possibility offshore, and blackfish provide an inshore opportunity.

Surfcasters are a minority among saltwater anglers, but Saturday’s Surf Day is all about them.

A gale warning is up in NY/NJ Bight from this evening through late tonight. The forecast is for northwest winds at 20-25 knots in the morning before dropping to 15-20 in the afternoon.

The Jamaica from Brielle has changed this weekend’s mid-range trip for cod and ling to Feb. 22-23.

Tight Lines with Al Ristori – The most beautiful game fish

There aren’t many species of fish that can be best described as beautiful, but the Maori sea perch seems to be the exception. The anglers who put this photo on Facebook only noted that they spent a lot of time and expense to release it.
