Though it was a fog-filled day, the trolling bite at Cape Charles, Va. was exceptional as 10 of 16 bites resulted in stripers from a mere 16 pounds up to a 54-pound trophy release on SHO-HUF.

There hadn’t been any more NJ surf reports before Fisherman’s Den on Long Beach Island reported one small one was released yesterday.

Friday’s NY/NJ Bight forecast is for north winds at 5-10 knots before going west in the afternoon at 10-15 with gusts to 20 knots. Morning showers are possible.

The Jamaica from Brielle had a good offshore wreck season for sea bass, but that fishery is now closed, and they’ll be sailing for wrecks that hold jumbo porgies every weekend in February by reservation. Weakfish, cod and pollock are also possible.

. The striped bass tagging fishery continues at Cape Charles, Virginia. SHO-NUF had Chuck Many aboard two days ago as nine were tagged with two over 50 pounds — but also a mere 6-pounder on a live eel.

Capt. Clint’s Striper Guide Service tagged two of 46 pounds plus a 42 today– and has openings tomorrow and Friday. Call 540 493-9660.

New Jersey’s ocean waters remain open all year for strpers, but the internal waters are closed until spring in order to prevent snagging of dormant stripers — though white perch fishing is encouraged. Those rivers aren’t ready for ice fishing yet, but often produce big catches when conditions are right.

Jerry Lasko and Maren Toleno gave the Ocean County surf a try this morning and afternoon, but saw little bird action and had no hits. They’ll be keeping an eye on it as long as conditions remain fishable and the water temperature holds up.

The Big Mohawk from Belmar reported good action throughout their New Year’s Day trip, but it was mostly shorts. One limit was taken along with some other keepers.

Jerry Lasko and Maren Toleno hadn’t been fishing for days, but spotted some terns working on tiny bait and had to give the Ocean County surf a try. Maren broke the ice for the New Year with a bass of about 18 inches on a paddletail. Jerry said the tiny bait fish were something he couldn’t identify and sent this photo. Let me know if you can identify it.

The great fishing for trophy stripers continues out of Cape Charles,Virginia. , where Capt. Clinton Lessard has been trolling 50-pounders regularly before placing Gray Fish tags in them and releasing them to spawn in a couple of months.

Though 50-pounders are almost routine, a couple of days ago one of the six bass released almost made the 60-pound mark which is difficult to achieve even among those fish heavy with roe. Lessard has only two open days left in his season — Jan. 1 and 10. Call him at 757-710-0098.

N.J. blackfishing has been good, and Capt. Ralph Leyrer has spots open on his Last Lady from Belmar both Sunday and Monday. Call 732 988-8907.

Mike Monte pounded the Monmouth County surf the last six mornings without a hit despite the presence of loons feeding on sand eels. He’s hanging up his rod and returning to Nantucket.

During many years of surfcasting in the N.J, surf I usually was able to pick a small bass or two blind casting throughout December, and often to the end of January. However, I never was able to get one on February. It was never good, but it was hard to give up the season completely.

The wind forecast is 5-10 knots south with a chance of fog.

SHO-NUF bass

There was bad news on Facebook today as Capt. Bob Garafano passed away at 85 on Christmas Day. The veteran skipper ran the large group charter boat Catherine II, which was the largest of that category in Belmar when I moved to the Shore. The funeral will be held Friday at St. Innocent’s church in Neptune at 10:30.

The weather looks good for the last jumbo sea bass trips to far offshore wrecks before that season closes. Southwest winds at 10-15 knots are predicted for tomorrow. The Golden Eagle from Belmar and the Paramount from Brielle have 7 p.m. Friday trips by reservation to fish on wrecks showing up on fishfinders as illustrated below:

Party boats are making their last trips to far offshore wrecks before the sea bass season closes.

The Paramount from Brielle has openings on Dec. 29and 30 trips that depart at 7 p.m. Call 732 528-5014 for required reservations. The Jamaica had limits of both sea bass and weakfish on this week’s trip along with plenty of scup.

The Golden Eagle from Belmar makes their final trip of the season to those sea bass wrecks on Dec. 30 at 7 p.m. The last trip produced limits of sea bass and weakfish as well as lots of porgies.

The forecast for the week features favorable west winds. Tomorrow starts with southwest winds at 10-15 knots plus gusts to 20 with 2-3-foot seas.

The weather was right, and Jerry Lasko saw birds working over bait in the Ocean County, N.J. surf, but he and Maren Toleno haven’t had a bite during the last two afternoons. Though the ocean conditions were fine, Barnegat Bay is already frozen over.

The forecast remains good with west winds at 10-15 knots tomorrow plus 2-4-foot seas.
