The Golden Eagle from Belmar braved the strong west wind to confirm that striped bass sre available to anglers in NY/NJ Bight. Though the bite wasn’t good. they got into good quantities and also had significant readings. Most of the bass were overs, but they also had a keeper.
A small craft advisory is up until 8 p.m. Sunday starts with northwest winds at just 5-10 knots before turning to west in the afternoon. Surfcasting conditions should be ideal.
The steady diet of northeast winds is giving way to westerlies which will continue rough seas in the short run while knocking down the big seas. As a result. the Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands will sail for stripers at 7 .a. m. Saturday. The Golden Eagle from Belmar has also announced a return to fishing for stripers and sea bass at 6:30 a.m. Saturday. Other party boats also may get back to it tomorrow, but be sure to call them before making the trip.
The forecast in NY/NJ Bight is for west winds at 20-25 knots before dropping to 15-20 in the afternoon.
Vinny D’Anton reported the Monmouth County surf was still rough this morning though he did hear of one small bass being caught on a plug. Those conditions should be much better with the west wind that may even blow all the water out at low spots during low tide.
Jim Hutchinson Jr. reports the ASMFC has voted 13-3 to retain status quo regulations for striped bass for this season while also forming a working group to study severely reduced spawning results in Chesapeake Bay.
The weather may be good enough for fishing once again as there’s a shift from easterly winds to a calming northwester.
Capt. Ron Santee had expected to get started again on Sunday, but will also try to get out for stripers with his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands at 7 a.m. Saturday , West winds at 25-30 knots should quickly knock down the east seas up to 9 feet which have been running this week. It will still be rough, but that’s often best for a hot fall striper bite.
Luciano retains Dream Boat lead
The November edition of the Fisherman magazine is out, and Thomas Luciano remains leadership of that publication’s Dream Boat Fishing Challenge. His 7.98-pound weakfish has led that category from the start, and the additions of the 7th place porgy and the 5th place sea robin totals 20 points for a four-point lead over early leader Rashawn Williams. The winner will receive a fully-equipped Steiger Craft center console.
The 15-pound minimum size for bluefish was finally breached as Amir Aripul now leads that category with a 16.5-pounder. Gregory Brennan took the lead in blackfish with a 7.59-pounder that also positions him in third overall so far.
The northeast winds continue with small craft warnings up and heavy rain also expected to
morrow. Capt. Ron Santee is hoping to be able to sail again for stripers with his Fishermen out of Atlantic Highlands on Sunday.
More of the same continues to cripple fishing in all but well-protected areas as the forecast for NY/NJ Bight continues at 20-25 knots plus gusts to 30. A small craft advisory is up through late Wednesday.

On the other hand, we need northeast winds at this time of year to get the fall migration started. There have been recent signs of that, but the water is still in the 60’s — and pompano were being caught during the Columbus Day weekend Beach Brawl.
There was better news today from Monmouth County beaches as Vinny D’Anton reported several decent school stripers have been caught on the Tsunami Sand Eel. There’s been no sightings of sand eels so far, though Vinny saw a sea gull drop a peanut bunker.

Capt. Frank Masseria wasn’t pleased with the competition for baits fished yesterday for stripers from his Vitamin Sea out of Port Monmouth Marina as noted: “The jig bite yesterday was pretty much nonexistent so we opted to live line today (thanks Derek and Jared)
The fish we found were all overs and the bite could have actually developed well except for the out of control dogfish. Pretty much couldn’t put a bait in the water without it being attacked.”
Today he had customers who wanted striper fillets rather than big releases. Therefore he stuck to casting shads while seeking small bait where he eventually found the smaller keepers.
The marine forecast for NY/NJ Bight switches back to northeast — though at only 10-15 knots.
There’s another great forecast for Sunday with west winds at just 5-10 knots.

Great forecast for Saturday in NY/NJ Bight with northwest winds at 5 to 10 knots
Just when early fall striper fishing looked to be well underway, those fish turned scarce and fussy today.
Capt. Ron Santee ran his Fishermen from Atlantic Highlands back to where he left plenty of them yesterday, but the bait had moved and the fleet never got on them. A couple of bass were caught and a couple more lost. Tomorrow is another day!
Chuck Many had big striper releases on Sunday with his Tyman from Highlands.”Sunday was a tough one!! South wind was howling, seas were rolling, but we did manage a few absolute monster Bass. Also had a cool moment when a Bluefin ate an eel on a down rod. Almost spooled us, chased it down to get line back on the reel, but it ultimately broke at the leader. You never know what might happen when you put a bait in the water!”

Capt. Mark DeBlasio reported last week from his Blue Runner from Point Pleasant. “Well .. a little birdie told me yesterday that our offshore season is a wrap and I’d have to agree. Chased some warm water to the south. Started off on troll and pretty early on went 1 for 2 on Yellowfin. Continued looking around and released some Bluefins and Skippies.
